Katie Melua – A Musical Legend in the Making
At the age of 23, Katie Melua has come a long way. Her musical career has never been the same before. With a Dutch tulip christened after her, she has become an iconic figure in the world of the socialites as well.
Katie has worked in tandem with Nelson Mandela to help the Aid Charity service. She is also the ambassador for “Save The Children” group and done other social service work. On her personal front, she is one of the most dedicated sportsperson who has taken part in Grand Prix circuit Silverstone, entered the Guinness World Record by parachuting daringly in North Sea. Katie has learned to fly an airplane, drive racing cars, and dive from highlands.
In her professional front, she is equally famous for picking up awards and prestigious accolades in Europe and America. Katie has bagged the World Music Award, two German Echo Awards, and a Golden Camera Award.
In the end of 2007, she had her dream come true when she worked with her idol, Eva Cassidy in a duet. The song, "What a Wonderful World", has won popularity among audience. Katie however, found it a way to tribute the voluntary service by donating the proceeds to the British Red Cross.
The third album, “Pictures” in October 2007, won international accolades for its lyrics, tunes, and music. From here onwards, Katie became a known personality as a vocalist and a musician.
A year later, her fourth album was released. The album, “The Katie Melua Collection”, offers a musical tribute of Katie’s songs that she has done so far.
However, Katie did not dream of becoming a singer or a songwriter from her tender age. When her family migrated to Britain during the Communist regime, she lived a life of a normal child with childlike preference. Later, when she took up Music as a subject in Brit School of Performing Arts, she began thinking of music seriously as her career.
Her first foray into the music world was at Brit School when Mike Batt, a noted composer and producer, signed her for “Dramatico” album. However, Katie did not leave her studies then. She judiciously studied her subject and graduated successfully before entering into the professional music career.
Although, Katie struggled a bit during her first release as she was still studying, her second release was immensely successful. Her second album, “Nine Million Bicycles” have been sold to 9 million users worldwide.
“Call off the Search” was the first album which has two songs written by Katie. The songs have a melancholy feel as one portrays the death of Eva while the other narrates the troubled time of Katie while at North Ireland. After initial hitches, the album was aired by BBC Radio.
The second album, “Piece by Piece” has innumerable, remarkable songs which are mostly written by Katie. Some are written by Batt as well. However, all songs sung by Katie from this album have been a hit. “Spider’s Web” for instance, bagged a number 52 mark in UK in 2006.
The third album, “Pictures” is unique in its own way. It has songs which can be placed in iTunes – for iPhones – and so, has become immensely popular among the mobile users. It has also bagged the 49th most best selling album in 2007.
Today, Katie is the best solo, female artist in the world. She has also embarked into acting but has not made much in these initial years.
However, music, songs, and lyrics were her passion even during younger days. When Katie was a teenager, she took part in a British TV Show. In this talent search show, Katie won a prize of 350 pounds. This was her first earning as a singer. It was precious to her and to her family as well. Katie gifted a chair to her father after winning the show.
Amid such powerful and breathtaking songs, lies a tender heart if one were to see Katie from an angle. Katie has donated a huge amount of money to charity – for children in need, destitute, AIDs victims, etc.
Today, even though she is working hard to produce more songs, she has not really turned her face away from charity work.
